Cabbage Leather Coral
(Sinularia Dura) is a very
durable coral that does well in
Miniature Coral Reefs. This
coral has grown all over my reef
tank surviving all sorts of water
and lighting conditions. I've
seen Cabbage Leather Coral in
many pet stores and for some
reason, it always looks very
pale in color. I much prefer the
rosy brown color that mine has.
My Cabbage Leather Coral has
grown into many different and
alluring shapes.
The Cabbage Leather Coral on the
left is part of my second reef tank. It
seems to get along very well with all
the other corals in the aquarium. I
don't feed this coral anything and it
stills grows very well. At the end of
the points that you see, there is a
multiple tentacle polyp that possibly
traps tinny organisms in the water,
however, I've never seen it trap
larger prey like Brine Shrimp. All that
Cabbage Leather Coral needs is a
little bit of light and good water
quality.
All of the pieces of Cabbage Leather
Coral that you have seen in these
pictures are located on the bottom of
my reef tanks. They ended up there
because they grew too well on the
top and I needed more space for
other corals. I still use it at the top
as a background for the reef tank.
The only corals that seemed to have
bothered the Cabbage Leather is
Wood's Polyps and the Bubble Tip
Anemone. The Wood's Polyps has
done the most damage to it.
The 2 photos below show the effects of coral bleaching on Cabbage Leather
Coral. The photo on the left shows a very pale looking Cabbage Leather Coral
that had been bleached by a drastic change in alkalinity during a water change.
It took about 2 months, but the Cabbage Leather Coral eventually regained its
color. The photo on the right illustrates the change and is testament to the
strength and durability of Cabbage Leather Coral.
