Blue Hippo Tang
Paracathurus hepatus
The Blue Hippo Tang is a commonly
used fish in
Miniature Coral Reefs.
You'll be hard pressed to find a pet
store that doesn't stock this salt
water fish.  The black markings and
yellow tail stand out dramatically
over its deep blue color.  It gets
along pretty well with other tank
mates, as long as it isn't another
Hippo Tang.  If you want more than
one, add a small school of about 5.
Make sure that the Hippo Tangs are
similar in size and place them all in
the reef tank at the same time.
The Blue Hippo Tang is generally a
good eater.  I feed mine dried algae
sheets and flake food.  He has such
a good appetite, that he has bitten
me a few times during feeding time.  I
also give all my tangs frozen Brine
and Mysis shrimps twice a week.
There are a couple of things that you
have to be careful with when
housing Hippo Tangs in the reef
tank.  First, they are susceptible to
parasites.  These parasites look like
white dots on the fish and even the
healthy specimen that you see in these photos has them.  The easiest way to solve this
is to add a couple of Cleaner Shrimps to your reef tank.   I prefer the Skunk Cleaner
Shrimp (Lysmata amboinensis) due to its aggressive cleaning habits and  bright colors.
The second problem is that the
Hippo Tang is kind of shy.  It spends
much of the day hiding in the live rock
and other fish start pushing the
Hippo Tang around.  The solution to
this is to make sure that your Hippo
Tang is the largest fish in the reef
tank.  This will make the Hippo Tang
more confident and less likely to be
harassed.  You can also try placing
the Hippo Tang in the aquarium first.
This will help you in keeping a happy
and healthy Hippo Tang in your reef
tank.
